Pay packages are now just a click away, and CEO compensation has become increasingly important to savvy donors.

If this is an area of uncertainty in your organization, a key first step is clearly defining the board’s roles and responsibilities in setting CEO pay, says Sandra Pace, managing director of the New York, NY-based compensation consultancy Steven Hall & Partners.

“The board will ultimately approve the compensation level, but the process leading up to it should be well defined, whether the full board of just a compensation committee is involved,” she says.
